Happy summer everyone! For six weeks, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9, using resources provided by Church of the Highlands, we will be teaming up with Christians around the world for One Prayer: a DVD series the explores the theme "God is ____" and ends with a service project on Saturday, July 18 - hopefully in conjunction with Sav-A-Life pregnancy care ministry.

We'll be meeting at 8 p.m. in the Rec Center's upstairs conference room; snacks and materials to be provided. This group is open to all UAB girls and their friends. Hope to see you there!

Sav-A-Life support grows in Birmingham!

For those who don't know, the Pregnancy Resource Center group receives counsel and support from Sav-A-Life, a pregnancy test center and Christian ministry here in Birmingham. On April 2, Sav-A-Life held their annual fund-raising dinner, and I wanted to share the results of that event with you so you could celebrate along with this life-changing organization:
Attendance: 510 people
New donors: 106 people
Total (income - expenses): $157,678

Those figures makes this event one of the most successful ever held! Through their pregnancy test center, Sav-A-Life touches countless families, and literally saves lives every year. If you are interested in learning more about the work Sav-A-Life does or volunteer opportunities,

I hope everyone is having a great week, and keeping stress in check as finals/papers/deadlines loom!

We are going to have a quick meeting tomorrow at 3:30 in the Rec Center's downstairs conference room to go over our resource components that has now been assembled into one document. There are still some holes to fill, so even if you haven't made it to a meeting yet, come on, because we'd love to get your input! There will be snacks. :)

Also, we are going to have a student-group table during new student orientations this summer, so if you will be in town, please contact me so we can work out a staffing schedule.

Grassroot efforts making a difference for Life

Some highlights:
— The Susan B. Anthony List says its supporters sent more anti-abortion-related letters, e-mails and faxes to Obama and lawmakers in the first quarter alone than during each of the last two years.

— The American Life League reported a 30 percent uptick in donations over last year.

— Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Jr., an anti-abortion Democrat who campaigned vigorously for Obama, has received more mail on abortion than on any other issue in 2009, spokesman Larry Smar said.

Activists have sent more than 100,000 postcards urging Casey to oppose the Freedom of Choice Act, which would guarantee the right to abortion in federal law. Obama told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in July 2007 that “the first thing I’d do as president” is sign the act. “It’s been our biggest organized mailing,” Smar said.

— More than 261,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Notre Dame to withdraw its invitation for Obama to speak at the Catholic university’s May 17 commencement. The petition says Obama has carried out “some of the most anti-life actions of any American president," including expanding taxpayer-funded research on embryonic stem cells.

— And Americans United for Life plans to expand its plans to expand its staff in Washington and, after the post-election crash, recently upgraded its computer system to handle the bump in online activism.

Just shows that while we may have a small voice in DC, that just makes our fight for Life across the country that much more important. Personally, I'm encouraged in numbers/statistics showing that we can make a difference!

Progress Report

Hey everyone! SORRY for the delay - I’m not sure where this week went! We had a really productive meeting last Friday. Thanks to all who came, and it was great to meet a new face. We compiled our different resource book sections, and sent them in to Jeanne to see what holes Sav-A-Life can plug for us. Major progress!

We discussed usability of the blog and FB group, and I need to remind everyone to make sure their personal FB settings allow you to receive group updates. And if you're not part of our group yet, join up!

We're looking into ways to become visible on-campus. Some ideas that were suggested:

freshman orientation student-group fairs that will run throughout the summer
(how do we get a table?)

running an article about the resource book in the Kaleidoscope
(how do we get published?)

Great ideas! What else?

We're contacting the Asst. Director of Student Programs to get his feedback on some questions. Hopefully those who attended can recall how we divided up who is asking Creston what...because I can’t. Although it’s not the worst thing to have more than one person ask – he’ll probably be relieved to see that I'm not making the group up!

Here’s what we want to know:

How can we get UAB web space?

What venue/events do student groups use for promotion of their group and events?

Are we allowed to post or display materials at designated spots throughout campus?

Can we put baskets of free pregnancy tests in bathrooms?

The first two are somewhat related and then the second two are also, so stake your claim on your questions! Creston Lynch will be our main point of contact and can be reached at 205-934-8020 or clynch@uab.edu. Let us know what you'll be following up on by leaving a comment.

Red Envelope Day

RED ENVELOPE DAY
March 31, 2009

1. Get a red envelope from Kinko’s or a party or office supply store (or you can purchase here).

2. On the front, address it to:
President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington , DC 20500

3. On the back, write the following message:

"This envelope represents one child who died because of an abortion. It is empty because the life that was taken is now unable to be a part of our world."

4. Then mail the envelope on March 31st, 2009.

President Obama has pledged to support and sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which will essentially "undo" every law currently in place to limit abortion in the U.S. , i.e., parental consent laws, parental notification, waiting periods, prohibition of transporting a minor girl across state lines to obtain an abortion, etc.

It may seem that those who believe abortion is wrong are in a minority. It may seem like we have no voice and it's shameful to even bring it up. Let us show our President and the world that the voices of those of us who do not believe abortion is acceptable are not silent and must be heard.

An empty red envelope will send a message to President Barack Obama that there is moral outrage in this country over this issue. It is a quiet, but clear message of protest.

Please forward this post to every one of your friends who you think would send one too. I wish we could send 50 million red envelopes, one for every child who has died before having a chance to live since Roe v Wade legalized abortion in the US 36 years ago.

I'm getting my red envelopes ready. How about you?

3/20 meeting wrap-up and announcements

We had a productive (and yummy) meeting last Friday; thanks so much to those who were able to attend! We have now divvied out assignments for gathering information for our Resource Guide. Soon we'll be able to point students in the right direction for housing, insurance, financial aid, counseling and so much more, right here on campus!

Mark your calendar! The next PRC meeting will be Friday, April 3 at 12 p.m. at the Rec Center's downstairs conference room. At this meeting, we will review our compiled information and see what needs are still unmet.

Welcome to the PRC virtual meeting! (get free pizza)

Thank you for your interest in the Pregnancy Resource Center student group, and welcome to the PRC blog! (free pizza info to follow) While it's still in early stages, this is the place to check for meeting times, progress updates, and share information with each other through comments and posts (let me know if you'd like to write a post). So put it in your bookmarks, follow it, whatever you can do to stay connected. And if you have ideas to increase it's usability or overall fabulousness, suggestions are welcome!

I want to encourage you to take that interest to the next level, by putting it into action. We are having a planning meeting next Friday, March 20 and would love to see you there! We will share some ideas, divy out resource-book assignments, and discuss our first on-campus event. Oh, and did I mention the free pizza? That's where it will be; hope you will be too!
